Preventatives
Preventatives for your dog or cat.
An ounce of prevention can eliminate a pound of problems. This saying is doubly true when it comes to preventatives for your pet, particularly when it comes to cost, effort, and heartache.
LET'S TALK PREVENTATIVE DETAILS
L:earn more about the preventative options for your pet.
Heartworm
Heartworms are parasites that are found in the heart and adjacent large blood vessels of infected dogs. Female worms are 6-14” long and ⅛” wide and male worms are about half the size of females. Heartworm is spread by a single mosquito bite exclusively, so it is difficult to avoid without a preventative. Treatment involves injections and ensuring your dog does not excessively play, run, or otherwise be too active during the treatment period. There is not an approved treatment for cats!
Flea
Fleas are an all too common occurrence with household pets, particularly cats and dogs. Usually it’s an annoyance for pets and owners, but in severe cases can result in other medical complications. Often treating an infected pet for fleas is only the beginning of the process since the living space will need to be treated time and time again until no additional eggs can hatch. What is not commonly known is that your dog’s tapeworms come from them ingesting flea eggs, which is another reason to ensure you have your pet on a flea preventative.
Tick
The most known reason for using a tick preventative is to keep dogs from contracting Lyme disease, but what about cats? Well ticks can also carry a number of other diseases, but another reason to consider a tick preventative is to ensure your pet’s ticks don’t transfer to you!
